Apple’s spending on research and development surged year over year by another $500 million last quarter, reaching $1.9 billion and growing to 3.3 percent of the company’s total net sales.

Yes, Apple’s R&D expenses rose to $1.9 billion. For comparison, Microsoft spent $2.9 billion on R&D over the same period.

And while Apple spent 3.3% of its revenue on research, Microsoft spent 14% of its quarterly revenue.

Apple had revenue of $58 billion. MS had $21 billion.

So, Apple spends only 65% what Microsoft does on R&D while making 2.8 times more.

Apple is thus over 4 times more efficient with every dollar it spends on R&D.
