As thousands gathered to make their voices heard during a rally earlier this week, one officer and a young man paused to hear each other out.

This image, shot by freelance photographer Johnny Nguyen, shows Portland Police Sgt. Bret Barnum hugging 12-year-old Devonte Hart during the Ferguson demonstration in Portland on Nov. 25, 2014.

According to Sgt. Barnum, the interaction took place at the beginning of the rally. With emotions running high as speakers were addressing the crowd, he noticed a young man with tears in his eyes holding a “Free Hugs” sign among a group of people.

An amazing and powerful photo. Read the whole story and you will again wish we had more stories like this.

But then read this about the boy, Devonte Hart, and you know he is something special. Because he is being raised by two remarkable adoptive parents.

And read about the police Sgt., Bret Barnum, whose journey to Bangladesh as part of a police training team changed his views about minorities while he helped create  bridges between children and police.

If only we could have more of this. Two people whose views of the world and of the others in it overlap enough to show real humanity.
