It is actually not better to merge early when one lane becomes closed. It is better to stay in the lane until the end of it and then merge.

This uses more of the road’s capacity, menaing it does not back up as much and flows better.

It also means that there is only 1 point of merger where things can get messed up rather than hundreds of random merger points.

So, you are not being a jerk by traveling to the front before merging. You are being safer and more considerate.
