If you start from a large group of almost anything and then get to cherrypick what you want, it is possible to ‘prove’ almost anything. The linked article provides tremendous insight into this using the fabled Woolworth store.
People fall for this sort of fallacy all the time. We are so good at finding patterns that we will find some even in random noise.
