Sunsidence is a real problem in many Gulf Coast cities (Houston comes to mind as another city that has bowl-like depressions. But its flooding potential is not nearly as huge as NO.) This will be a very difficult problem to overcome. One levee that failed was 3 feet lower than it was when it was built 30 years ago. A foot a decade is a hard number to change. With rising sea levels and bigger storms, NO may just not have much life left.
