Santorum is the man Clarence Darrow was discussing

Santorum: Satan is Systematically Destroying America
[Via rightwingwatch.org]

Back in 2008, Rick Santorum traveled to Ave Maria University in Florida to deliver an address to students attending the Catholic university founded by Domino’s Pizza founder Tom Monaghan which he moved from Michigan as part of his effort to build his own personal theocracy in Naples.

Earlier today I quoted Clarence Darrow. Here is the relevant part:

If today you can take a thing like evolution and make it a crime to teach in the public schools, tomorrow you can make it a crime to teach it in the private schools and next year you can make it a crime to teach it to the hustings or in the church. At the next session you may ban books and the newspapers. Soon you may set Catholic against Catholic and Protestant against Protestant, and try to foist your own religion upon the minds of men. If you can do one, you can do the other. Ignorance and fanaticism are ever busy and need feeding. Always feeding and gloating for more. Today it is the public school teachers; tomorrow the private. The next day the preachers and the lecturers, the magazines, the books, the newspapers. After a while, Your Honor, it is the setting of man against man and creed against creed until with flying banners and beating drums we are marching backward to the glorious ages of the sixteenth century when bigots lighted fagots to burn the men who dared to bring any intelligence and enlightenment and culture to the human mind.

Santorum in this speech states that Protestants in the US have fallen to Satan. The educational institutions have also fallen to Satan. Educated people fell a long time ago. Apparently rock concerts and the NBA also fell to Lucifer.

Only the Catholic Church and government have not fallen yet.

Santorum fits Darrow’s description pretty well.

He is trying to foist his own religion ‘upon the minds of men.’ He is relying on ignorance and fanatics to gain power. Public school teachers are attacked. The media are attacked. Man against man and creed against creed,

Santorum seems to want to march us back further than the 16th century. He wants to get way past the Enlightenment. More like the 12th century is more his style.

What would he actually do to recreate his world of long ago? I hope we never find out.
