Letting the customers find the cheapest wireless service would be anethma to the carriers

Apple granted patent where carriers bid to provide service to iPhones
[Via AppleInsider]

A patent recently granted to Apple could wrest power away from the wireless carriers by creating a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) system that would allow networks to bid against each other over wireless services provided to iPhone users.

This would sound really nice for the customers – dynamically finding the best service when you need it. It would change the industry, putting control into the hands of the customers.

Which is why the carriers will fight this with every dirty trick they can. Cheaper rates is not what they want at all.

Another industry being disrupted by new technology and unable to adapt. When your only path is to destroy things that help the consumer, you are on a path to destruction.

What I want to replace the iPod Classic – An iPod touch with 128 GB at a Classic price

Apple’s iPod classic 5th most popular media player in 2010, unlikely to go away

Apple’s black 160GB iPod classic was the fifth best selling media player in the U.S. for all of 2010, suggesting that the hard drive-based device won’t be exiting the company’s product lineup in the near future.

Yes, I’m a dreamer.

If Apple replaced the iPod Classic –with 160 GB disk drive – with an iPod Touch with 128 GB solid state storage and a retina display for a Classic Price ( about $250), it would sell like hotcakes.

Won’t happen but I would expect that a 128GB iPod Touch at an iPod Touch price (about $400) will be here soon.

But maybe we will see a 64GB iPod Touch at the Classic price, or close to it. Then the Classic might be under some pressure. How many people will really need all that extra memory?

I’m sure Apple knows. So, if the Classic disappears, being replaced by a 64 GB iPod Touch, we will know that not many really do need that extra memory. If the Classic sticks around, it will be because there are a lot who need it.

Posting from iPad not quite there

Yesterday I posted something from Flipboard using the email to WordPress process. It worked in a basic way but without any formatting.

When I went to use the WordPress App to format it, I found real problems with the App for doing just that. I would have had to hand code everything, which I have not done for 10 years.

Then when I tried to edit it in Safari, there were all sorts of problems – scrollbars not appearing, scripts not working.

So I went to BlogPress and it did the job, at least for simple stuff. Blockquotes and font formatting. But some of my other needs for formatting – not so much. I’d love it if I could store some personalized html coding.

I’m going to have to take a greater look at this problem.

Some wanting a Verizon iPhone will go home empty handed

Sales of Apple’s Verizon iPhone predicted to top 1M in first week
[Via AppleInsider]

Despite the fact that the new Verizon iPhone 4 is essentially the same as the model that went on sale 8 months ago with rival carrier AT&T, Apple is still predicted to top a million sales of the highly anticipated handset in the first week.

Since my very rough calculations indicated that 7 million smartphone owners said they would stand in line on Day 1 to get a Verizon iPhone, there will be lots of unhappy people, while Apple carries a wad of cash to the bank.
