PBS launches full-content iPad app
[Via Macworld]
Public Broadcasting Service has made a big leap into the App Store’s video market with an iPad app that provides access to full-length episodes from 25 of its shows.

I can stream full length versions of a ton of shows from PBS. I’m watching Austin City Limits. Not too shabby. I just switched over to Masterpiece Mystery and Sherlock – a Study in Pink. It hooked me in the first 10 seconds. I’ll be watching this. And now it is Broadway Night at In Performance at the White House.
The streaming starts pretty quickly and I have only had a couple of typical PBS ads. A very nice way to catch some nice content for the iPad.
The interface is really well done, making discovering content and then controlling it a joy. It has a nice button to quickly move back 30 seconds while easily moving between letterbox and standard presentation. I can also scroll rapidly to specific spot in the show. A lot is in HD so it looks pretty good. And there are lots of explanatory text, easily localized TV schedules, creating favorites, sharing, etc.
I’ve enjoyed the ABC player. The PBS App is even better. Nova, Nature,Masterpiece Theater, Julia Child – yes I am watching Julia and Emeril cook cajun.
Streaming TV on an iPad or similar device will be a much more common way to deliver the content over the next few years. That is why I think AppleTV will be a big deal.
