Huge ice shelf breaks loose in Canada – Climate Change- msnbc.com:

So, a huge ice shelf, 4500 years old, breaks up almost overnight. The loss of Arctic sea ice may very well be as bad this year as it was during last year’s record summer.
And the Greenland Glaciers are showing some real weakness. This is particularly worrisome since this could result in sea levels rising.
Fun times.

McCain Uses Walter Reed Middle School, Not Army Hospital, as Backdrop | Threat Level from Wired.com:

Okay, there has been enough craziness this election campaign. I may think it is a transformative one but we still have to remain grounded in reality. But things are just getting really, really weird.
When my wife and I listened to Obama’s acceptance speech, we simultaneously sat bolt upright at this from his speech:
It’s not because John McCain doesn’t care. It’s because John McCain doesn’t get it.
The words and manner in which it was said resonated with some dialog from one of our favorite movies, The American President:
Bob’s problem isn’t that he doesn’t get it. Bob’s problem is that he can’t sell it.
Our first thought was “Is Aaron Sorkin writing Obama’s speeches!” It looks like others had the same thought.. In the latest GQ, Sorkin says:
The first time I met Barack Obama—I should say the only time I’ve met Barack Obama—was a year ago, when he was doing fifty-person-cocktail-party fund-raisers. He flattered me by saying, “My intention is to steal a lot of your lines.”
Looks like he was certainly influenced by Sorkin. Sorkin admits that the Jimmy Smits character, Matthew Santos, from the last season on The West Wing was based on Obama,
But I did not have give this even a second thought. Lots of coincidences happen every day without there being a connection. A particular choice of words does not necessarily mean anything.
But now I am getting really weirded out. In McCain’s acceptance speech that was something very odd. While watching on TV, it looked like he was standing in front of a green screen, a really bad shade of green. It was not until later that we found out that it was actually a picture of a building, with him in front of the green grass.
This apparently peaked some interest because it was reported that this was a picture of Walter Reed Middle School in LA. While some people speculate that the picture was supposed to be Walter Reed Medical Hospital, I was more curious why so many people recognized that school so rapidly. It turns out that the school lies right next to CBS studios, so it is often used as a location for films.
And guess what? Here it is in one of them:
The West Wing?! Santos is giving his speech announcing his candidacy right in front of the same school! Where he talks about Hope. Was there a secret West Wing fan in the AV crew that put together the slide show? Or is the Universe trying to tell us that the story of the West Wing from 2006 is actually some sort of parallel Universe that is now overlapping ours? Should we all study that season of The West Wing to understand what is happening?
Weird! Maybe I will have to start really examining the parallels between this election and Battlestar Galactica. Let’s see – Tigh is tortured and seriously injured in prison. As is McCain. Laura Roslin was a political unknown until she was thrust on the public stage. Same with Palin. Tigh’s wife and McCain’s wife look a lot alike. Strange.
